Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"The most consistently brilliant science fiction writer in the world."
--John Brunner
THE INSPIRATION FOR BLADERUNNER. . .
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was published in 1968. Grim and foreboding, even today it is a masterpiece ahead of its time.
By 2021, the World War had killed millions, driving entire species into extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn't afford one, companies built incredibly realistic simulacrae: horses, birds, cats, sheep. . .
They even built humans.
Emigrees to Mars received androids so sophisticated it was impossible to tell them from true men or women. Fearful of the havoc these artificial humans could wreak, the government banned them from Earth. But when androids didn't want to be identified, they just blended in.
Rick Deckard was an officially sanctioned bounty hunter whose job was to find rogue androids, and to retire them. But cornered, androids tended to fight back, with deadly results.
"[Dick] sees all the sparkling and terrifying possibilities. . . that other authors shy away from."

Apple iPad Business Uses - iPad Apps Designed For Business

The iPad was initially released in great uncertainty. No one was sure that it would capture the imagination of computer users. More importantly was the question as to whether the potential Apple iPad business users would adopt it for use as a mobile computer in preference to their laptops. Of course we now know that the iPad launch has been a massive success for Apple and in particular for the iPad business community.

Built In Apple iPad Business Functionality

The most obvious benefit is the fact that it is light weight and highly portable. It is ready in a moment. You do not have to wait 5 minutes for the iPad to initialise and wake up. It performs tasks such as searching the internet and email so much better than smart phones because you can easily read everything without straining your eyes.

There are business apps that lend themselves to business use including calendar, mail, web browser, maps, notes and contacts. If you are familiar with the iPhone and blackberry then you know the apps already but they work much better on the iPad. This is because the software has had a huge upgrade and also the fact that the screen size makes the iPad easier to use.

The Best iPad Apps for Business and Productivity

If you have ever spent time on iTunes searching through the thousands of apps you know that there are literally thousands to choose from. For business there are spreadsheet, word processors, organisers, PDF readers and so on. And even the top of the range paid for apps cost just a few dollars. You will never see price tags of $299 or more for iPad apps. The savings on software is a huge hidden benefit for iPad owners. If you were equiping a laptop with the software you need it would cost $1000's. With an iPad you would do the same for less than $50.

Promote Your Business With An App.

There new apps coming out daily and already businesses are having their own apps made to showcase their products and services on the iPad. Again the cost compared to a full website is tiny. Mobile computing is the future as regards promoting a business and having your own company app will be the norm within 5 years.

Apple iPad Business Accessories

There are certain accessories that mean that you can walk itno you office and get better useability when you need a desktop machine. You can connect a full keyboard up for easier typing. You can also get dedicated briefcases that protect your iPad and allow you to use it without taking it out of the case. In many ways the iPad has turned out to be the ultimate tablet computer. I remember 10 years ago all the noise about tablet computing. Well the iPad has effectively supplied that market.

Hold Me To This: Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead

Hold Me To This: Christopher O'Riley Plays RadioheadTribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto

Cheap EBooks - iPad Third Party Alternatives

One of the most notable dimensions that made the Apple iPhone so incredibly popular was Apple's intelligent integration of downloadable applications from its App store. Now, with the introduction of the new Apple iPad, Apple is looking like it will do the same thing in terms of iPad applications and iBook downloads from their iBookstore.

Now, users will generally have to pay about $12 to $14 per each iBook, which is a bit of a disadvantage, especially after forking over hundreds of dollars for the iPad itself. So where can iPad users find cheap ebooks? iPad owners might just have to wait and see.

Amazon's Kindle is the iPad's closest counterpart. Currently, there is an Amazon Kindle application for the iPad, which generally offers iPad-specific features, like new page turning animations, a library view with pinch, zoom and scrolling support, and adjustable screen brightness.

But what about other third-party developers? Surely there will be a huge market potential for cheap ebooks. iPad users are no doubt already scouring the internet for ways to avoid purchasing every single iBook one by one.

Popular among other Apple products like the iPhone and iTouch, the iPad can be "jail broken," which essentially allows code to be run on the device which is not authorized by Apple. iPad users can then download several applications which are not made available through the iBookstore and App Store to access different apps and other cheap ebooks. iPad jail breaking will most likely be very common among users.

Apple is predicting that there will be "a whole 'nother gold rush for developers if they build for iPad." And most people agree that the iPad will definitely create new opportunities for third party developers.

As of now, the Kindle app is one of the most popular applications, with a Stanza app and Facebook app in the works. Whatever the case may be for the future of the Apple iPad, people are always going to be searching for cheap ebooks. iPad users will most definitely be searching for alternative solutions that the Apple iBookstore cannot deliver.

Want cheap ebooks? iPad owners can visit www.iPadMediaDownloads.com.

Will the Apple iPad Live Up to Its Hype?

With much fanfare and hype the Apple iPad was introduced on January 27, 2010. Already the critics are out in force complaining of the things the iPad doesn't have. Some have even called it a giant iPhone that can't make phone calls. One thing is certain; the iPad has all of the Apple panache just as the iPod and iPhone have, but will it be a big hit or is it a white elephant?

The iPad was introduced as a cross between a notebook and a smart phone. The Apple disciples have been eagerly awaiting a tablet computer from Apple for a long time, so I imagine that it will be a hit with them. For the non-Apple fanatics that took to the iPhone and iPod like ducks to water, I wonder if they will embrace the iPad too.

iPad Criticism

Whenever a big consumer electronics company comes out with a new and innovative product there is always criticism. I suppose we are all so used to technological advances that we are expectant that a new electronic device will be the answer to all our prayers. After all, a few years ago some people carried around a cell phone, an iPod, a PDA device or laptop, and a digital camera. So smartphones like the iPhone were welcome as they could almost replace all of the individual mentioned devices.

One of the most common criticisms is the name which many have said is too closely related to a feminine hygiene product prompting the term iTampon. Maybe they are right and it would have been better to call it the iTablet or iSlate. The critics have also mentioned many functions that they believe the iPad should incorporate, like:

No integrated USB
No HDMI port
No expandable memory
No camera for photos, video or apps
No flash support
No streaming video
No multitasking

The Prices

Many people were surprised by the low price when it was introduced as they expected a price of $1000. Others have said that the price is in fact high for such a device prompting rumours that Apple will reduce the price very shortly if expected sales are not forthcoming.

There are in fact various prices depending on the configuration. The iPad comes with 16, 32, or 64 GB capacity and with either Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and 3G. So the base model with 16 GB and Wi-Fi only sells for $499, while the 64 GB model with both Wi-Fi and 3G sells for $829.

The Features

Criticism asides, there is a lot to like about the many features that the iPad does have. One of the major features is the ebook reader, iBook, which may end up being a Kindle killer. It is about the same size as the Kindle DX but it is slightly heaver and thicker. The main benefit is the LED backlit color display that all e-ink displays used by dedicated ebook reader's lack. This will make it extremely useful for subscribing to newspapers and magazines as it is no fun reading a magazine on a Kindle in black and white.

Like many ebook readers, the iPad also supports viewing in portrait and landscape mode. But with the email function of the iPad, in landscape you can see your opened email plus the inbox and when you turn the display to portrait the opened email opens to fill the screen.

Other Features

Photos - You can use the iPad as a digital photo frame while it's docked or charging.

Video - You can watch HD moves, YouTube videos, podcasts, TV shows, and music videos. You can also switch between widescreen and full screen with just a double tap of the finger.

iPod and iTunes - You can display album art at full size and listen to music with the built-in speakers or by the Bluetooth wireless speakers. With iTunes you can preview songs before buying and you can sync the iPad with your iTunes library or your computer.

App Store - 140,000 apps from games to business are available to buy.

There are also maps, notes, calendar, contacts, and search functions. The battery life is stated at 10 hours which is enough to watch movies, surf the web, or listen to music.

Summary

So, will the Apple iPad sell like hot cakes? I am sure that most of the Apple die-hard fans will immediately snap up this latest offering. Only time will tell if the general public will find this device as irresistible as Steve Jobs hopes. Myself, I believe it will take off and only improve with future releases but I will sit on the fence for a while until I see if they are indeed going to reduce the price and wait for the iPad 2!

Create iPad Apps - Some Useful Tools To Make And Popularize Apps

Do not underestimate the importance of marketing. IPad apps have not become very popular yet because the total number of iPad users is yet to reach its maximum. This is the reason why now is the best time to create as may iPad apps as possible. As number of users increase, you will find that your decision to create iPad apps early was a very smart one.

The SKD offered by Apple is the most convenient method of creating iPad apps. However, there are numerous other tools that you can use to improve the quality and performance of the apps you have created. If you want to get the Graphic User Interface perfect from the first step, you should use tools like iPad GUI, iPad GUI Kit, Design Stencil for iPad or iPad Vector GUI.

Each tool has its own set of features and you can make sure that the visual brilliance of the device is utilized to the fullest with the help of your iPad apps.

When creating iPad apps, do consider the following options:

Considering releasing a version for the desktop as well as the iPhone. Or, if you want to expand your market further, you can opt for a comprehensive release including the iPad. However, the amount of effort required will be very high. It makes sense to target the low range (cell phone), mid range (iPad) and high range (laptop) on a step by step basis.
Do not treat app users are fools. Give them sufficient space and opportunity to modify the interface. Touch screen works in a highly intuitive manner. Giving freedom to the user to come up with his or her own set of movements to manipulate the app will help make it more popular.
Do not restrict gesture recognition to hand or finger movement alone. Even a tap on the device or a shake should result in operation of the application.
Use social media and web 2.0 smartly. The middle aged group is the most prolific user of iPad. Target these groups online in communities and social networking sites like Facebook.
No matter what, never every release the app without a beta and testing phase. Nothing can sink the iPad app you have created faster than bugs in the finished product. People will accept and tolerate bugs in beta versions. However, the final version must always be free of bugs.
Keep an eye out for the most popular iPad app category. If more and more individuals prefer iPad games, it makes sense to enter this segment only if you are confident of having an idea that will shake the market. Otherwise, it makes sense to restrict yourself to low competition and low risk markets. This will give you more time to boost popularity.

Would you like a way to make money on the Internet without being an author OR programmer? While the iPad is an extremely cool piece of technology, there's something even cooler about it...The ability to make money selling iPad applications! http://imnmagic.com/ipadapps/

Best iPad Accessories - Here They Are

What are going to be the most famous iPad accessories for each iPad buyer to buy? The important accessories will certainly be the old favorites such as screen protectors and cases. In fact, most people will certainly purchase these add-ons straight away, the very day they buy their iPad.

One of the newest iPad accessories which we now see in the market is the Apple iPad protective case. What makes this protective case unique is that aside from the protection it gives your iPad, it can also offer extra features. You may use it to adjust your iPad to allow you to use it with comfort. For example, if you must do some typing then you may place it at an angle which makes it convenient to write on the Multi-Touch keypad. Obviously, there is the fact that some people will want to read ebooks on their iPad with the introduction of the iBook shop. By simply using this one-of-a-kind case, you may hold your iPad the same way you will a book.

How about if you want to use your iPad for watching a movie? You can let the iPad stand in the optimum position for viewing a film, whether you are inside your home, or on a long car ride.

The iPad docks are certain to be a hit. Although the keyboard dock might be quite an investment, it's well worth the expense because of the various features which go with it. Not only can you use the dock to conveniently sync your iPad up to your main computer, and keep it charged, but you can also use it to hook up to an external power source. Using this keypad dock, you might also link other accessories to your iPad like the camera kit or the VGA cable. If you opt for the keypad dock, you will also have a way to link a traditional keyboard to your iPad device, which means that you can conveniently do some typing work, if that's what you choose to use your iPad for.

Best iPad Leather Cases and Covers

If you own an iPad, then you must be looking for the right protection cover for it. When you have a new shiny toy or device such as an iPad and want to carry it around with you everywhere - let's admit it, the beauty relies in the possibility to use it without having a single cable attached - well, you must seriously take into consideration protecting it from any potential damage during transportation. And why not take a look at the many iPad leather cases that could add a tint of good taste to your already impressive new iPad?

An iPad without a case or cover is like a person without clothes.

Whether you are a fan of leather or you want to be in-fashion, or - why not - you want to make a statement about what belongs to you, the leather iPad case will put the device out of the ordinary. There are plenty of models out there that could fit your likes. From the classy mahogany without too many pockets and lines, to the shiny silver leather that could match with anything you want.

The iPad leather folio is not an exclusive for men, because women who own an iPad can also appreciate leather material, some even more than men. There are many designs that could be associated to a distinct purse or even to a pair of shoes. It will not be long before grand names of the designer world will put their signature on iPad leather cases, and not only. It seems the iPad really is the new thing, and how you dress it up does say something about you.

Where can you find these leather cases for iPad? Well, like everything else, online. There are a lot of products to choose from, but you have to be careful and compare the price to the quality you expect. The Apple online store only sells you an iPad case that also acts like a stand, but maybe you'd like something else. Most of the iPad leather covers have an additional layer or two of a special material to offer extra protection from scratch and humidity, some have hardenings and the leather is simply for the distinct look.

It is good to chose the right protection case for your device, whatever gadget you have. It is also good to stand out somehow and express something, even through the smallest of things. After all, it's the small things that matter.

The iPad - Will it Succeed For Browsing the Internet?

The Apple iPad will be launched in the USA in early April and then to other countries later in the month, but will the iPad succeed in the market? We try and answer this question in this article.

Firstly, lets look at what the iPad is. In his keynote speech that launched the product, Steve Jobs described the iPad as a "third category device". By saying this, he was positioning the product between the iPhone and a laptop. It has to perform better than an iPhone and almost better at most of the laptop capabilities to succeed, he said.

Better at what though? Steve Jobs pointed at web browsing as a key capability. The iPad has to be spectacular at browsing the web. Well it is certainly larger than an iPhone and has the very sexy and useful capability to be rotated into either portrait or landscape that the iPhone has. You can also use your finger to scroll and manipulate the web pages which makes browsing very intuitive and also uncannily interactive.

Yes, there is no question that the iPad is better at web browsing than the iPhone for one very good reason. It is bigger. I tried a search on Yahoo yesterday with an iPhone. It was almost impossible because the screen was too small and the web page sadly hadn't been designed to work with an iPhone. The size of the IPad screen makes surfing the Internet far more enjoyable and fruitful.

What about comparing it to a laptop though? You cannot move a laptop around to change the display from portrait to landscape and you can't navigate with your fingers so you need either the built in pointing device or a mouse. The iPad probably wins with these features, but only if you really need to rotate the screen image, and we have all spent many years browsing the web not wanting, or needing to. Most laptops have bigger screens too and many have higher screen resolutions than the 1024 X 768 in the iPad.

Of course a laptop is more expensive than an iPad, but what about a Net book? These are highly portable mobile devices with WiFi and 3G access that can browse the web. They also cost around the same as an iPad will. there is less clear blue water between the capabilities of the iPad and a Net book. This is where the competition for the iPad is.

Will consumers find the iPad sufficiently appealing that they would rather buy an iPad rather than a Net book? Time will tell.

What is the Best Selling Apple iPad Tablet?

Many would think the 64gb 3G iPad tablet would be the best selling iPad tablet, but surprisingly it's not! According to our consumer statistics for the month of May 2010, the 16gb iPad Wi-Fi version was clearly the leader by a margin of 2 to 1 over the 64gb 3G version. Why? Well one obvious reason is the price point. The 16gb iPad has an introductory retail price of just $499 and this price has remained pretty stable among resellers. This is due to Apple's marketing plan. It appears that Apple manufactured an abundant supply of 16gb WI-Fi tablets which lead resellers, like the many vendors in eBay, to swoop them up and relist them in hopes of making vast returns. Well as it appears, the profits are not nearly what eBay sellers were hoping for. As it appears, many eBay retailers are all trying to cash out at the same time, thus flooding the market with 16gb iPads. This is in no way benefiting the resellers as it keeps the prices low, but it is definitely beneficial to the buyers, making it the most affordable and best selling iPad tablet right now. Buyers are able to purchase the 16gb iPad in most instances for exactly what they would pay online through Apple or at an Apple retail store location, but without the long anticipated waiting/shipping period. Paying a few extra dollars through eBay for shipping and forgoing the average 3-4 week waiting period from purchasing directly from Apple, is unquestionably the preference among consumers wanting to get this device in their hands.

The 32gb iPad tablet on the other hand is the least best selling iPad according to our statistical sales data. It appears that consumers either want an affordable new innovative gadget that's fits within a comfortable budget like the entry level iPad or they want all the gusto that the 64gb 3G has to offer. The 64gb 3G iPad tablet is the second best selling iPad tablet among consumers. The suggested retail price is $699 for the Wi-Fi version or an additional $130 for the 3G functionality, which brings the grand total to $829 + tax but that's only if you order it directly from the online Apple store or you're put on an Apple retail store waiting list. The waiting list can be up to 30 days and people want them now! This is why eBay resellers that are lucky enough to have a few in stock are now selling the 64gb 3G for a premium. In some cases consumers are paying up to $400 over the suggested retail price just to get their hands on one of these little babies.

Whether you purchase a 16gb or a 64gb (with or without 3G connectivity), you will be more than satisfied. Why? Unless you plan on turning your iPad into some type of super movie theater with tons of movies on it, I wouldn't be too concerned. This is why... the average downloadable application uses between 1kbps to 30mbps. There are a total of 1024mbps in 1gb. So, 16gb X 1024mbps = 16,400mbps of useable space. A 16gb iPad tablet that averages 30mbps per app would allow you up to 546 apps. Even the larger apps like Apple iWork only use 52.9 Mbps of space.

What about the issue of purchasing a Wi-Fi iPad (without 3G service) and regretting it later when you find yourself in areas without a Wi-Fi connection? Well, it looks like you're covered there too. It was just released that Verizon is jumping onboard with their version of a battery operated 3G-converter-to-Wi-Fi device. The Wi-Fi signal can then be picked up by your Wi-Fi iPad. Thus, giving it the ability to take an ordinary Wi-Fi iPad and instantly turn it in to a super iPad with 3G availability. Wow, a $499 iPad tablet with portable internet access! The only thing Verizon is going to have to work on is their traditional 2 year contract that is usually accompanied with their service plans and a monthly rate that can compete with AT&T's incredibly low $14.99 data plan. If they can over come those two obstacles, I believe they will do amazingly well. Apple iPad Vs Apple MacBook Pro

While the iPad is generally meant to be a link in products from the iPhone to the MacBook Pro it has a vast number of functions that can be compared to that of the MacBook Pro. The iPad is considered a tablet PC and offers the ease of touch screen technology and portability. The MacBook Pro is considered a laptop PC and offers a bit power and functionality then the iPad while still being relatively portable.

Users of the iPhone may find that the iPad offers much of the same features as the iPad. The difference between the two being that the iPad has a much larger view area. If you are looking for a gadget that offers some basic functions of a PC such as internet, e-mail, word processing, and some applications then the iPad is perfect for you. The MacBook pro on the other hand is a fully functional PC with many more capabilities and infinitely more digital storage space. When designing the iPad I think Apple leaned a bit too much towards the iPhone.

While the size of the iPad is much more convenient to carry around then the MacBook Pro, users will notice a loss in power due to it's smaller size. Being one of it's major selling points, the size of the iPad has been reported to have over heating issues when exposed to direct sunlight. Most major electronics are not meant to handle the heat of direct sunlight over extended periods of time however with something like the portability of the iPad, designers should have taken this into consideration.

The MacBook Pro has been on the market for much longer then the iPad. I am sure that the MacBook Pro had it's share of quirks when it was first produced as well. If you are thinking of adding an iPad to your gadget arsenal consider waiting till the second model comes out. This will give designers a good idea of what can be improved on and you won't be wasting your money on a prototype model.

All in all I think at this point the macbook pro has my money. I personally own an iPhone and a laptop PC. I can't think any reason why I would want anything in between. If the iPad operated more on level with the MacBook Pro I could definitely see the attraction to this gadget's portability perk. Before completely putting the iPad out of mind I would like to see where Apple decides to go with it in the next few years.

Apple iPad Ebooks - Where to Find Them and How They Differ From Normal Ebooks

iPad ebooks are electronic books dedicated to be read on Apple's newest computer tablet, iPad. iPad reader ranks among competitions which include Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony Reader Touch and BeBook Neo.

For people who buy iPad with the idea of reading ebooks with it, the iPad does not disappoint. The device is easy to hold, as well as being not heavier than the average hardcover. The iPad ebooks reader is also pleasant on the eye, it gives you the visual of books with shadows at the spine of books and dimension visual at the edges of the screen to give the illusion of looking at a real book, instead of reading a Word document. The font is clear and the images are in colors - making it children book friendly, as well as being accommodating to graphic novels, comic and other books coming with illustrative support.

If you don't fancy the font of the text you see, the iPad can change it. Same goes with the size of the font you are looking at. This is especially helpful to those whose eyesight are no longer at its best. The options for font type (5), size (10) and brightness are on the top right. You need to give the display a tap. This will also open the search box. As you read one of your iPad ebooks, buttons for library and table of contents can be found in the upper left. In the event you click to view the table of contents, a red 'Resume' flag appears on the right to give you a quick way to go back where you are reading.

At the bottom of the screen are the page number, the total number of pages shown, as well as a slider bar which you can use to quickly browse the parts of the book. Turning the page is as simple as sliding your finger over the screen from left to right or vice versa. Highlighting (tap, hold and slide on the words) give you the options to translate, bookmark or search. Another highlight from the iPad reader is its backlight which makes for a comfortable reading at night or in relative darkness.

There is no need to worry about difficulties in accessing ebooks for your iPad. Both Apple and Amazon sell iPad ebooks. Companies which publish iPad ebooks include HarperCollins, Penguin, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette. Prices range from $9.99 to $12.99. Apple and Amazon also give access to free ebooks on public domain, a bit like electronic library. Using the iPad, you can also access free ebooks from OpenCulture.com, Stanza and Eucalyptus.

However, no bookstore application come preloaded on your iPad. Even the iBookstore needs to be downloaded from App store. The application is free but still, having to download it first may prove a nuisance to some people. Before you go on an iPad ebooks shopping rampage however, make sure that you truly enjoy reading using the iPad. The iBookstore ties its ebooks to the application and once you have purchased and downloaded your ebooks, you can only read them on the iPad. Unlike your Amazon Kindle files which can be transferred to other devices.

The Human Animal

The Human Animal

It's a journey through the psyche of man, as man realizes the futility of living in the grips of ego and surrenders to seek answers within.

The Human Animal is the fourth studio release from Android Lust, brainchild of NYC based singer/songwriter/producer Shikhee. It comes four years after the release of Devour, Rise and Take Flight, a track from which garnered a spot on the official Navy NCIS soundtrack album. The Human Animal sees Shikhee collaborating with her live band for the first time in a studio release, giving it an unexpected organic warmth while maintaining her trademark machine edge that cuts so uncomfortably if you dare to let it in.

Known for her uncompromising ear for fresh sounds, Shikhee scoured the NYC streets and subways with a portable recorder, collecting sounds that found their way as rhythmic and melodic elements throughout the album.

There is also a bonus remix of "God In The Hole" by Jerome Dillon (formerly of Nine Inch Nails, nearLY), and Anthony Baldino — an atmospheric opus that is a chilling end to the journey.

How to Improve Your iPad's WiFi Performance

When I bought the WiFi-enabled iPad I knew that I might miss being able to connect over the 3G network. What I didn't expect was not being able to connect over WiFi! Unfortunately, I'm not alone with my WiFi problems. Many iPad owners are reporting problems with WiFi - either connecting to or staying connected to a wireless network.

If, like me, you're wondering what to do about WiFi, then read on. I've done the research and come up with the top 5 ways to fix the iPad WiFi connection problems.

1. Last things first: the on-off switch. You'd be amazed at how many complex step-by-step instructions end with "if that doesn't work, turn the iPad off and on again." Your iPad's not always "on," any more than an iPhone is.

Hold down the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears, and drag it to the right to power off. To power on, hold down the button again and let the iPad go through its startup routine. This takes a while, and when you want your iPad to work right a few seconds is an eternity. But always keep this one ready - it's often the "last resort" right answer.

2. Look Ma, no hands. Users are reporting that if you're holding an iPad like a book, oriented taller than wide with your hands on its sides, your strong WiFi signal gets weaker, and your weak signal disappears. Don't.

3. Renew your lease. The iPad has a known issue with DHCP leases. Long story short, it tries to retain an internet address on a DHCP network without renewing its DHCP lease. The network thinks the internet address is fair game, and issues it to somebody else. When working over a DHCP network:

Tap Settings/General. Under Auto-Lock, select "Never."
If you're losing the DHCP connection while working, tap the blue arrow next to the network name and "Renew Lease."
When you finish working on the network, don't lock your screen without either powering off or turning off your WiFi first. To turn off WiFi, go to Settings/WiFi, and set the switch to "Off."4. Turn up the brightness. A lot of power-saving tips advise you to turn down the screen brightness to preserve battery life, but if you're losing connectivity, it's a tradeoff. Nobody's sure, but there's speculation that the iPad figures that turning down your brightness is an attempt to save battery life, and decides to turn down your WiFi radio too.

Some complaints center on auto-brightness, which is a built-in feature that turns the brightness up and down based on ambient conditions. Turn your brightness up to the max, and you may get a sudden boost to your WiFi signal as well.

5. WEP and QoS.

WEP is an encryption protocol. Your iPad is more at home with WPA2, if that protocol is available on the wireless modem you're connecting to - so dump the WEP setting.

QoS selects from a broad range of bands automatically to connect you to the internet - unless, of course, you're on an Apple product like the iPad. Apple doesn't support QoS, so disable it.Finally, if you can't keep a WiFi connection at least keep current with Apple's iPad software updates. To Apple, the iPad's WiFi problems are as real a threat as the competition's "me too" tablets, and they've promised fixes in upcoming software releases.

If you're having iPad WiFi problems, find more fixes and solutions at AppCraver.com, a website dedicated to troubleshooting tips and app reviews for the iPhone, iPod and iPad devices.

The Terminator [UMD for PSP]

The Terminator [UMD for PSP]This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley

iPad 101 - So You're Thinking of Becoming an iPad Developer?

If you're a developer, you've probably heard of the thousands of apps designed just for the iPad. Plus, you are probably aware that around 150,000 apps running on the iPhone and iPod touch also run on the iPad. You may be asking yourself if you should jump in the game and develop apps for this new device. In this article we are going to look at what it takes to develop software for the iPad.

But first, let's recognize the iPad for what it is: a device for consuming information. It's an excellent machine for viewing videos, photos, surfing the Web, or listening to music. The iBook app is outstanding for reading e-books. The iPad is also excellent for e-mail and gaming. Right out of the box you can use games from the iPhone and iPod touch. And sound quality is good, the battery lasts for 10 or more hours, and the touch screen is great for gaming. Printing from the iPad is problematic, however, making the device troublesome for business users.

The iPhone SDK 3.2, which can be used to develop for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, includes a complete set of tools to create iPad apps. In the SDK you'll find the Xcode IDE, iPhone Simulator, Interface Builder, and Instruments, which allows you to see performance data graphically. Note that iPad development is possible only on Mac OS X version 10.6.2.

Other development resources include the Programming Guide, Sample Code, Human Interface Guidelines, and Creating Universal Applications, which helps you to create binaries that will run on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

You have a choice regarding coding of your apps. The native language for the device is Objective-C. This option is great for developing games because of the fast response, terrific graphics, and functionality with other iPad features.

Web design tools are the easiest way to create apps, however. This route involves using HTML5 and JavaScript.

You may find that it's difficult to create a good UI for your app using a touch-driven device like iPad. Well, this is a new experience for users and developers alike. It's very important that your app is both useful and usable, so you may want to create a prototype and then design, test, re-design, and test until you have a great UI.

Another point to remember is that the iPad interface is very familiar to the iPhone interface. It is just like the iPhone, only bigger. Note that you can use the new SDK to modify and optimize iPhone apps for the iPad.

As developers, you probably don't do much software testing, but make sure you don't forget this critical activity, as your app will hopefully end up on thousands of devices, and you don't want there to be any bugs in it.

Finally, distributing your app is easy on the App Store. To submit an app to the App Store you must pay $99 to become a member of the Apple Developer Program. For users, the App Store is a trusted provider, and it also gives developers a chance to make money. So good luck!
